Vitamin K

Vitamin K  is a group of structurally similar, fat-soluble  V itamins  the human body requires for  C omplete Synthesis  of certain proteins that are prerequisites for blood  c oagulation  and which the body also needs for controlling binding of calcium in bones and other tissues. Vitamin K is actually a group of compounds. The most important of these compounds appears to be vitamin K1 and vitamin K2.  Vitamin K1 is obtained from leafy greens and some other vegetables.  Vitamin K2 is a group of compounds largely obtained from meats, cheeses, and eggs, and synthesised by bacteria. Low levels of vitamin K can raise the risk of uncontrolled bleeding. While vitamin K deficiencies are rare in adults, they are very common in n ewborn  infants. Vitamin E (Tocopherols)

Vitamin E is found naturally in some foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement.  “Vitamin E” is the collective name for a group of fat-soluble compounds with distinctive antioxidant activities. Naturally occurring vitamin E exists in eight chemical forms (alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocopherol and alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol) that have varying levels of biological activity. Alpha- (or α-) tocopherol is the only form that is recognized to meet human requirements. Serum concentrations of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) depend on the liver , which takes up the nutrient after the various forms are absorbed from the small intestine. The liver preferentially re secretes only alpha-tocopherol via the hepatic alpha-tocopherol transfer protein ; the liver metabolizes and excretes the other vitamin E forms . Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods, added to others, and available as a dietary supplement.  It is also produced endogenously when ultraviolet rays from sunlight strike the skin and trigger vitamin D synthesis.  Vitamin D obtained from sun exposure, food, and supplements is biologically inert and must undergo two hydroxylations in the body for activation .  The first occurs in the liver and converts vitamin D to 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] ,  also known as calcidiol .  The second occurs primarily in the kidney and forms the physiologically active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH) 2 D], also known as calcitriol .
